Study: Indigenous cultural burning can help fight wildfires

According to a new study from the University of Waterloo, Indigenous fire stewardship can help fight wildfires and boost biodiversity in the forests.

As many in the forest industry know, Indigenous communities traditionally carried out cultural burning to create trails, help with agriculture, and other cultural reasons, reports CBC News.

The study reviewed other studies and reports on cultural burning by Indigenous people from 1900 to today. It notes that today there’s a misunderstanding about cultural burning, but Indigenous communities can and have been safely executing cultural burnings for years.
